The transition to adulthood can often be a bumpy ride, because we are psychological children trying to fill emotional voids that were not fulfilled while we were growing up. Learning to love ourselves is one of the most challenging things we can do in our lifetime, because of: Social and cultural conditioning that demands we behave a certain way, Mainstream media messages telling us we’re never good enough, An economy that perpetuates slavery to work and debt. Philosopher Dad offers some mindful wisdom to navigate this mindless maze.
In February of 2009, I made a decision to stop slowly killing myself.
I had spent more than 2 decades in a vocation that was chipping away at my soul while at the same time feeding my alcohol and drug addictions, which were growing beyond my control.
After 8 years in 12-step doctrine and meetings, after several relapses, and after losing several friends who didn’t return from their relapses, I decided to find a more secular, evidence-based program that could not only help me in my recovery journey, but also help others who were challenged by substance use disorder (SUD) and other mental health issues.
Since 2018, I’m happy to say that SMART (self-management and recovery training) has helped me stay on the wagon of life. My Philosopher Dad would be relieved to know that I am breaking the cycle of addictions in our family.
Daily Wisdom from my Philosopher Dad contains a lot of my father’s wisdom, together with my life’s experiences and the timeless wisdom that has been passed to me from countless mentors.
When you read the daily message, spend a few minutes of contemplation and write your intentions for the day. Our words are powerful, and our written words are magical.
Please always remember to talk to yourself like you talk to your best friends.
May the force be with you... and, remember, YOU are the force!
When I started to "set intentions" for my day, I finally became free from mental health & addiction illnesses.
It was nothing short of a miracle for me.
Setting intentions can shape not just what you do - they shape how you show up. Intentions can act like a compass - providing direction & clarity. Setting intentions can encourage mindfulness, and can help you become more conscious of your words, thoughts, habits, and actions - instead of running on autopilot.
